Secret of the Stars (Japanese title: Aqutallion) is a turn-based RPG developed and published by Tecmo in 1993 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Players select actions via menus, with commands executing at the end of each turn, and must switch between two parties to access unique areas and advance the story.
The plot follows protagonist Ray, who forms the Aqutallion Warriors with his allies to seek out and destroy Homncruse, an evil force threatening the world. Ray starts out living alone on a small island, then meets companions Tina, Cody, Leona, and Dan, and builds a town for residents harmed by Homncruse. Villains range from the goofy Cat Boo and Badbad to the far more menacing elite generals of Homncruse, each with distinct traits.
During their journey, Ray and his allies undergo trials in their respective temples to gain the lesser power of Banalet and boost their combat abilities. Dan, a descendant of Aqutallion’s prosperous sage clan, holds a unique status. When Ray, Tina, Cody, and Leona attain Banalet status and combine their power with Dan’s, the Aqutallion Warriors are reborn with immense strength.
Additionally, players can recruit 11 characters called Kustera, who play key roles in assisting the Aqutallion Warriors with their missions. Kustera members mainly supplement the warriors’ strength but are also critical to story progression. The temples where the Aqutallion Warriors gain Banalet status contain teleporters accessible only to Kustera, leading to dungeons with rare treasures.
The game features rich, varied character designs, with each Aqutallion Warrior boasting unique traits: Ray is the balanced team leader skilled in physical attacks, with a fire element; Tina, the first companion to join, excels at support and healing magic, with an ice element; Cody is the team’s tank with high physical attack but low speed and magic ability, with a wind element; Leona is the fastest member, proficient with swords and claws, with a thunder element; Dan, the last to join, is a prosperous sage with low stamina but powerful healing and attack magic.
On the villain side, the game includes many distinct enemies, such as the first optional boss Cat Boo, Badbad who turns Beegees Town residents into dogs, the child-kidnapping Ringo brothers (Bingo and Leech), circus ringmaster Garados, and Homncruse’s four great generals: Dram, Booth, Gara, and Godem, with the final boss being the source of evil itself, Homncruse.
Secret of the Stars received moderately positive reviews upon release. While its graphics were criticized, its engaging storyline made up for the shortcoming. The game’s monster designs were also praised, described as “The X-Files with a sense of humor.” Furthermore, it blends accessible RPG design with high difficulty, making it suitable for both new and experienced RPG players.
