Kantaro's 53 Stages of the Tokaido is a side-scrolling action game released by Sunsoft for the NES in 1986. Players take on the role of fireworks maker Kantaro, who sets out from Kyoto along the 53 Stages of the Tokaido route to reunite with his girlfriend Momoko in Edo. However, during his journey, a merchant and his henchmen attempt to kidnap Kantaro to steal his fireworks-making skills. The game features 21 levels, each representing a stage of the Tokaido. Kantaro's main attack is throwing firecrackers, and he can also jump to avoid enemies. Items are hidden throughout the levels, which players can reveal by causing explosions to gain special abilities like invincibility. Kantaro starts with three lives, and losing one life occurs if he touches or is hit by an enemy once. The game is known for its high difficulty.
