Xak: The Art of Visual Stage is a classic 1989 RPG developed by Japanese studio Micro Cabin. Originally launched on PC-8801, it was later ported to MSX2, PC-98, X68000, PC Engine, and Super Famicom.
Set in a high-fantasy world, the game follows ancient gods who split the realm into Xak (human), Oceanity (fairy), and Xexis (demon) after a great war, sealing Xexis to block invasions. When the powerful demon Badu breaks his 250-year ice seal, King Wavis sends fairy Pixie to Fearless Village to find warrior Dork Kart, who is missing. Players take on the role of Dork’s 16-year-old son Latok, guided by Pixie and the spirit of war god Duel—Latok’s ancestor—on a quest to defeat Badu and find his father.
Praised for its epic story and standout 42-track soundtrack by Takashi Sasai and Tadahiro Nitta, the game features a top-down perspective, open exploration, combat, and puzzles, delivering an immersive experience that made it Micro Cabin’s breakthrough hit and a beloved retro RPG classic.
