Flight of the Intruder is a 1991 NES flight simulation game developed by Imagineering and published by Mindscape. Adapted from Stephen Coonts’ novel of the same name and set during the Vietnam War, it lets players fly the A-6 Intruder attack jet or F-4 Phantom fighter to carry out carrier-launched missions targeting North Vietnam.
It features varied mission types including bombing, air patrol, and SEAD. Players face tight enemy defenses and must follow complex rules of engagement, with realistic touches like missile failures and smoky F-4 engines.
In the planning phase, players can fully customize flight plans, weapon loadouts, and routes. Mid-flight, you can switch control between aircraft or let AI take over. A fast-forward feature cuts down on long cruise times, but automatically resumes normal speed when enemies enter visual range.
Controls are deep: radar and targeting systems have multiple modes, and flight handling demands precision. The game offers multiple realism/difficulty levels, comes with a detailed manual featuring real pilot anecdotes, and lets players choose manual or AI carrier landings — manual landings have an extremely tight margin for error, ramping up mission challenge.
At launch, Flight of the Intruder was seen as a successor to the Falcon series, though it never matched that franchise’s fame. It earned praise for its wingman controls, flight model, and realistic design, and is regarded as a top-tier flight sim of its era.
