USA Ice Hockey is a 1988 ice hockey simulation game released by Nintendo. It first launched on Japan's Famicom Disk System, then came to the NES in North America and select PAL regions. With simple yet strategic gameplay, it captures the essence of ice hockey perfectly. Players control a 5-player team plus a goalie, with games split into 3 periods. The goal is to outscore the opponent before time runs out, starting with a center-ice faceoff. There are 3 player types to choose from: fast but weak faceoff specialists, well-rounded all-rounders, and slow but powerful players built for physical play and hard shots. The rink mirrors real ice hockey rinks, with goal lines, offensive/defensive zones, and a neutral zone. If two opposing players fight for the puck too long, a scrum breaks out, and the losing player gets sent to the penalty box. Team rosters vary by region: the Japanese version has Japan, USA, Czechoslovakia, Canada, Poland, and the USSR, while North American/European versions swap Japan for Sweden. Developed by Nintendo R&D4, directed by Hideki Kondo, produced by Masayuki Uemura and Shigeru Miyamoto, with music by Soyo Oka, USA Ice Hockey is a beloved NES sports game thanks to its easy controls and deep strategy.
