SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron is a side-scrolling action game based on the hit animated series of the same name. Developed by AIM and published by Hudson Soft for the Super NES in North America in August 1995, it brings the iconic vigilante cats to classic 16-bit gaming.
Set in the fictional Megakat City, the game lets players choose between two lead heroes: Chance "T-Bone" Furlong and Jake "Razor" Clawson. Former members of the city’s paramilitary law enforcement group the Enforcers, the pair was demoted to a junkyard after defying orders and destroying headquarters. Using scrapyard parts, they built the advanced Turbokat jet and protect the city as the SWAT Kats.
The game features five levels, each adapted from different episodes of the cartoon. Players face off against iconic villains including Dr. Viper, Madkat, the Pastmaster, and the Metallikats, culminating in a final showdown with main antagonist Dark Kat. It uses a password system for progress saving, and select levels include third-person flight missions where players pilot the Turbokat in aerial combat.
While the game faithfully recreates the show’s characters and story, it did not receive widespread acclaim upon release. Critics noted its design and gameplay failed to fully tap into the franchise’s potential, making it a mediocre entry among Super NES titles.
Overall, SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron is a game targeted at fans of the animated series, offering a chance to revisit classic characters and stories, though it delivers only average performance in gameplay and innovation.
