Superman is a 1992 side-scrolling action game developed by Sunsoft for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, based on the iconic DC Comics character. Originally planned for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), the project was canceled early in development.
Players control Superman through multiple levels, battling classic villains including Brainiac, The Prankster, Metallo, and Mister Mxyzptlk. Each level opens with a Daily Planet front page announcing a supervillain causing chaos in the city, followed by Clark Kent transforming into Superman to begin the challenge.
The game restricts Superman’s powers; players primarily fight using jumps, punches, and kicks. To use superpowers, players must collect specific icons throughout levels—for example, a super punch icon to break walls and progress. Each level ends with a boss fight against a supervillain, and victory triggers a congratulatory Daily Planet headline. In the final level, Superman flies to Brainiac’s space station, rematches previous villains, and ultimately faces Brainiac himself.
While the game’s 16-bit graphics and sound received positive reviews, it was criticized for limiting Superman’s abilities and its simplistic story. Players could only hold one superpower icon at a time, and collecting the wrong icon sometimes forced a game reset. Though this issue was fixed before release, many reviewers evaluated versions that still contained the bug.
Notably, the planned SNES version never came to fruition.
