Super R-Type is a side-scrolling shooter developed and published by Irem in 1991 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). A partial port of R-Type II, it retains 4 original levels and adds 3 new ones. Players pilot the R-9 fighter to battle the evil Bydo Empire. The game is known for its high difficulty, mainly due to the lack of checkpoints—losing a life forces a restart from the current level’s beginning. It also suffers from noticeable slowdown when there are many on-screen elements, a common SNES issue but particularly prominent here. Multiple weapons are available: - Red: Forward horizontal shots with alternating red/blue lasers - Blue: Reflective lasers that bounce around the screen - Yellow: Vertical shots firing flame waves up and down - Green: Spread shots firing up to 8 fireballs at once - Gray: Short-range high-power shots, similar to a shotgun Super R-Type launched in Japan on July 13, 1991, and in North America on September 1 the same year. It was re-released on the Wii Virtual Console in 2008 but delisted in March 2012. On April 12, 2024, it became available worldwide via Nintendo Switch Online. Though criticized for its high difficulty and slowdown, its stunning graphics and smooth controls won over players. French magazine *Joypad* gave it an 87% score, praising its "beautiful graphics" and "excellent controls" while noting significant slowdown with many on-screen sprites. Overall, as a classic entry in the R-Type series, Super R-Type remains a beloved title among shoot-’em-up fans thanks to its unique level design and challenging gameplay.
