Super Mario Bros. 3 is a classic side-scrolling action game released by Nintendo for the NES on October 23, 1988. It sold 3.84 million copies in Japan and 17.28 million worldwide, ranking as the second best-selling NES game ever, only behind the first Super Mario Bros. title. The game retains the core gameplay of its predecessor, letting players control Mario or Luigi on adventures, while adding many new features. Besides running and jumping, players can slide down slopes, pick up and throw special blocks, and climb vines freely. With certain power-ups, Mario can fly and float, greatly boosting gameplay variety. The game world consists of eight distinct kingdoms, each with multiple themed levels. For example, World 2 "Desert Land" has pyramid and desert levels, while World 4 "Giant Land" features double-sized obstacles and enemies. In the story, Bowser leads the Koopalings to invade seven kingdoms of the Mushroom World, stealing kings' wands and turning the kings into animals. Mario and Luigi must defeat the Koopalings, recover the wands, restore the kings, and save the Mushroom World. With rich content and innovative gameplay, Super Mario Bros. 3 is one of the most beloved entries in the Mario franchise, and has had a profound impact on later games.
