The Super Game Boy is a 1994 Nintendo peripheral for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It lets you play Game Boy (GB) games on your SNES console via your TV. Shaped like an SNES cartridge with a top GB slot, you plug it into your SNES, insert a GB game, and play on the big screen. When running GB games, the display sits centered on your TV with a Game Boy-style border. It includes a pseudo-color palette—press the SNES controller’s X button to toggle between light tint and dark reddish-brown contrast modes. Games marked "Super Game Boy Compatible" on their packaging use custom, unique borders stored in their ROM. A classic Game Boy-era device, it runs Game Boy Color (GBC) games labeled "Game Boy Compatible," but only in monochrome (except the title screen) since it lacks GBC color support. GBC-exclusive titles like *Pokémon Crystal* will not work at all. Important: The Super Game Boy does not support hot swapping. Always fully power off your SNES before inserting or removing GB cartridges to avoid corrupting save data via pin short-circuiting. It has no power switch of its own—it turns on with the SNES—so handle with care to prevent data loss. Overall, the Super Game Boy offered a new way to enjoy GB games on TV, expanding the SNES’s capabilities and meeting 1990s players’ demand for bigger screens and color-enhanced gameplay.
