Super Bomberman 2 is an action maze game developed and published by Hudson Soft in 1994 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It is the second entry in the Super Bomberman series and part of the broader Bomberman franchise, notable as the only series title without a two-player story mode.
In story mode, players control Bomberman to navigate mazes full of obstacles and enemies, aiming to unlock the door to the next level. Players place bombs to defeat enemies and destroy obstacles, while collecting power-ups hidden in mazes to boost bomb count, explosion range, movement speed and more. The game features 5 worlds, each ending with a boss fight: players first battle the boss in hand-to-hand combat, then face its giant mech.
The multiplayer mode supports up to 4 players via the Super Multitap accessory. It offers 10 arenas designed exclusively for multiplayer, with options for free-for-all or team battles. The mode also adds the "G-Bomber" feature: the winning player appears in gold in the next match and gains a random power-up via a spinning wheel.
The plot centers on five evil cyborgs called the "Five Dastardly Bombers", who seek to rule the universe. Bomberman is captured by them and locked in a space station cell. Players must help Bomberman escape, challenge the five foes, ultimately save Earth and defeat these alien invaders.
Super Bomberman 2 received widespread acclaim upon release. Critics praised its strategic gameplay, cute graphics and music, with the multiplayer mode widely regarded as the game's highlight. It sold over 713,000 copies in Japan, making it one of the most popular titles on the SNES platform.
