SimCity is a city-building simulation game developed by Maxis and published by Nintendo, released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1991. Players take on the role of mayor, tasked with planning and managing city growth—zoning residential, commercial, and industrial areas, building roads, power grids, and public services—to meet citizens’ needs and drive urban prosperity.
The SNES version of SimCity introduced multiple improvements and expansions over the original. It added a new bonus building system, with structures like casinos, large parks, amusement parks, and exposition centers unlockable by meeting specific conditions. It also added a bank feature letting players take out $10,000 loans, with new borrowing only allowed after full repayment.
For disaster events, the SNES version replaced the original’s Godzilla monster with Nintendo’s iconic character Bowser, adding a playful twist. It also introduced Dr. Wright, a player advisor who offers city construction and management tips. The character is modeled after game designer Will Wright, with design input from Nintendo developer Shigeru Miyamoto.
SimCity’s success on the SNES further advanced the city-building simulation genre and left a lasting impact on later entries like SimCity 2000 and SimCity 3000.
