SimCity is a city-building simulation game developed by Maxis and published by Nintendo, released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1991. Players take on the role of mayor, tasked with planning and managing city growth—zoning residential, commercial, and industrial areas, and building infrastructure like roads and power facilities—to meet citizens’ needs and drive prosperity.
The SNES version of SimCity introduced several improvements and expansions over the original. It added a new bonus building system, where players can unlock special structures such as casinos, large parks, amusement parks, and exposition centers by meeting specific conditions. It also included a bank feature that lets players take out loans to fund city construction, though no additional loans are available until the existing one is repaid.
For disaster events, the SNES version replaced the original’s Godzilla monster with Bowser, the iconic villain from the Super Mario series, adding a fun, playful twist to the game.
It also introduced a consultant character named Dr. Wright, modeled after game designer Will Wright, who offers players tips on city construction and management.
The success of SimCity on the SNES further advanced the city-building simulation genre and laid the groundwork for subsequent titles like SimCity 2000.
