Game Introduction
Secret of Mana (Japanese: Seiken Densetsu 2) is a 1993 action RPG developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Set in a vibrant fantasy world, it follows three heroes—Randi, Primm, and Popoi—as they team up to stop an empire from conquering the world using an ancient battleship. The game features a real-time combat system: players can switch control between the three characters at any time, with the other two controlled by AI. Its innovative ring menu system lets players quickly select actions mid-battle while the game pauses, delivering smooth, intuitive gameplay. It also supports up to 3-player local co-op, with drop-in/drop-out functionality for enhanced social play. Players have access to 8 distinct weapons (sword, spear, bow, axe, and more), each of which gains proficiency and unlocks new skills with repeated use and upgrades. The robust magic system requires players to seek out 8 elemental spirits to learn spells aligned with attributes like light, dark, water, and fire. Secret of Mana has earned widespread acclaim for its bright, colorful visuals, sweeping story, innovative ring menu, and real-time combat. Its original soundtrack, composed by Hiroki Kikuta, remains a fan favorite. Since its launch, the game has been ported to multiple platforms, including the Wii Virtual Console, iOS, and Android. A full 3D remake was released in 2018 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Windows.
Gameplay
Game Overview
Secret of Mana, released in Japan as Seiken Densetsu 2 on August 6, 1993 and in North America on October 3, was developed and published by Square. A boy pulls the Mana Sword from its stone and is exiled by his village, then travels with Primm and Popoi to claim the eight Mana Seeds before an empire can revive the ancient flying fortress. Koichi Ishii directed, Nasir Gebelli handled most of the programming and Hiroki Kikuta wrote the score.
Core Gameplay
Combat is fully real-time: a power gauge at the bottom of the screen decides how much damage a swing does, emptying on each attack and refilling over a moment, so waiting for a full bar is the difference between a chip and a real hit. The Ring Command menu floats over the active character, and the action pauses while you change weapons, cast a spell or use an item. Eight weapon types, sword, spear, bow, axe, boomerang, glove, whip and javelin, each have eight proficiency levels that unlock new charged techniques, and Weapon Orbs taken to a blacksmith reforge them into stronger forms.
About the European Release
This is the Revision 1 French release, with menus and dialogue in French, distributed in Europe by Nintendo. As a PAL cartridge it runs at 50Hz, which means black bars at the top and bottom of the picture, a slightly slower overall pace than the Japanese and North American NTSC versions, and a marginally different pitch to the music. The content itself is identical. Three-player co-op needs a Super Multitap, and with only two players the third hero is left to the AI, whose behaviour can be tuned separately in the menu.
Game Tips
- Ring Command menu hovering over the active hero, pausing the action while you swap gear, cast or use an item
- A power gauge that empties on each swing and refills, so timing beats button mashing, a mechanic later adopted across the action RPG genre
- Eight weapon types with eight proficiency levels each, sword, spear, bow, axe, boomerang, glove, whip and javelin, every level unlocking a new charged attack, with Weapon Orbs taken to a town blacksmith for reforging
- Eight Elemental spirits grant magic once rescued, with Primm on healing and support and the sprite on attack and status spells
- Three players at once through the Super Multitap, and latecomers can drop in or out at any moment
- Flammie the dragon, rideable later on, flies freely over a Mode 7 world map
- French menus and dialogue, running at PAL 50Hz with picture borders and a pace slightly slower than the NTSC releases
Frequently Asked Questions
Up to three, each controlling one hero. On real hardware that needs a Super Multitap, while an emulator can simply map three gamepads. Any hero without a player is handled by the AI.
Using a weapon type repeatedly raises its proficiency, and each of the eight levels unlocks a new charged technique. Raw power comes from Weapon Orbs, which a town blacksmith uses to reforge the weapon.
Rescuing the eight Elementals unlocks spells of the matching element. Magic has skill levels like weapons and costs MP, with Primm leaning towards healing and support and the sprite towards attack and status effects.
The main story takes about twenty hours, longer if you max out all eight weapons and rescue every Elemental.
Menus and dialogue are in French, but the systems match the Japanese and North American releases. Running at PAL 50Hz adds borders to the picture, slows the pace slightly and shifts the pitch of the music a little.
