Secret of Evermore is a 1995 action RPG developed and published by Square's US branch, the only game the branch ever made. With a time-travel theme, it follows a boy and his pet dog who accidentally enter Evermore, an otherworld created by ancient civilization technology. The game has an eerie, mysterious atmosphere with excellent visuals and music.
It features a real-time combat system where players control the protagonist and his dog. The game includes many random and pseudo-random events, such as the password door in the final area whose code changes with each new playthrough, boosting replayability and challenge.
However, the game has flaws like low hit rates and long hitstun durations. It also has several bugs, some of which can halt progress entirely.
Despite these issues, Secret of Evermore is regarded as a hidden gem on the SNES, well worth playing for retro game fans.
