Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a historical simulation strategy game first released by Japan's Koei (now Koei Tecmo Games) on December 10, 1985. Set in China's Three Kingdoms period at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, players can take on the roles of historical warlords or generals, aiming to unify China through internal affairs, diplomacy, and military means. The game features five scenarios and supports up to eight players simultaneously. In the game, players need to engage in internal affairs activities such as agricultural development and commercial investment to strengthen their own forces. Meanwhile, they weaken hostile forces through strategies and diplomacy, and occupy enemy cities through warfare. The game emphasizes the principle of unit countering, such as cavalry countering infantry, infantry countering archers, and archers countering cavalry. Since the release of its first installment, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series has developed numerous sequels, becoming one of the longest-running video game series in history. The series is widely acclaimed in Chinese-speaking regions, Japan, South Korea, and other places, and is hailed as one of the most influential works in historical simulation games.
