Romance of the Three Kingdoms: The Conqueror of the Central Plains is a historical strategy simulation game released by Namco for the NES in 1988. Set in China’s Three Kingdoms period, players take on the role of a warlord aiming to unify China. At the start, players answer a series of questions to determine their chosen ruler, with six historical figures including Liu Bei, Liu Zhang, Sun Quan, Cao Cao, Ma Teng, and Yuan Shao. The game begins in January 200 AD, and players use limited commands to handle internal affairs, military, and diplomatic activities. For internal affairs, players can check city status, transfer generals, gather intelligence, and develop territories. Militarily, players can scout, recruit troops, and launch wars. Diplomatically, players can send gifts to improve relations with other forces. It uses a turn-based system; each turn players execute a set number of commands, then computer-controlled opponents act. Battles are semi-automatic, requiring players to organize formations wisely and command troops. The game features 241 generals total; players must use strategy and wisdom to expand their power and ultimately unify China.
