Hydlide is a 1984 action role-playing game (ARPG) developed and published by T&E Soft, first released in Japan for platforms like the NEC PC-6001 and PC-8801. Renowned for its open-world exploration and real-time combat system, it is regarded as one of the pioneers of Japanese ARPGs. In the game, players take on the role of Jim, a young knight tasked with finding Princess Ann, who has been turned into three fairies by the evil demon Varalys, and defeating Varalys to restore peace to the fairyland. The game features a unique attack and defense mode switching mechanic, requiring players to select the appropriate mode based on combat situations. Additionally, it introduced an automatic health regeneration system, where the character's health gradually recovers when standing still. Hydlide achieved great success in Japan, selling over 2 million copies and exerting a profound influence on subsequent ARPGs. Its open-world design and real-time combat system laid the foundation for later games such as the Ys series. However, the game received a relatively negative response in North America. Due to its late release in the region, more advanced ARPGs like *The Legend of Zelda* had already been launched, leading to Hydlide being considered outdated and even mistakenly regarded as a copycat of *The Legend of Zelda*. Overall, as a representative work of early ARPGs, Hydlide holds an important position in gaming history with its innovative gameplay mechanics and open-world design.
