Super Dodge Ball (Japanese: Nekketsu Koukou Dodgeball Bu) is a dodgeball sports game developed and published by Technōs Japan in 1987. It first launched on arcades in November 1987, and was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) on July 26, 1988.
As the second entry in the Kunio-kun series, this title differs significantly from its predecessor, *Renegade*, in style and gameplay. It features super-deformed two-head-tall characters with exaggerated, comical movements and expressions, establishing the Kunio-kun series' signature style.
The core gameplay has players control a team of characters competing in dodgeball matches on playground-like courts. Players can select teammates with distinct traits, each boasting unique skills and stats. The goal is to use team members' abilities to dodge opponents' throws and hit rival players until the entire opposing team is eliminated.
With fast-paced action, the game requires players to nimbly dodge and counter opponents' throws, while cleverly using on-court obstacles and special items to gain an edge. Additionally, Super Dodge Ball supports local multiplayer, letting players compete with friends for extra fun and competitiveness.
A standout feature is its brawl-like mechanics and "Magic Ball" system. Dodgeball rules are only loosely followed to keep the sport recognizable; in practice, ball holders can attack any player outside their own team, making it essentially a "ball fight" game. Key characters also have unique Magic Balls, each with distinct visuals, flight paths, and varying damage and reaction effects when hitting opponents.
The game earned positive reviews and commercial success upon release, becoming one of the most beloved classic titles on the NES platform.
