Mortal Kombat is a fighting game launched by Midway in 1992, first released on arcade platforms and later ported to home consoles like the Super Nintendo (SNES). It is famous for its realistic digitized character graphics and gory, violent combat scenes, making it a classic in fighting game history. Set in a universe of 18 realms, its story follows Earthrealm facing invasion by Outworld emperor Shao Kahn. To protect Earth, Raiden gathers warriors including Shaolin monk Liu Kang and Special Forces member Sonya Blade to compete in the "Mortal Kombat" fighting tournament, battling Shao Kahn’s forces. In gameplay, players choose from 7 characters, each with unique special moves and Fatalities. It uses a 5-button control scheme: high/low punch, high/low kick, and block. Players perform attacks and defenses via button and directional input combinations. The game also introduced the "Juggling" mechanic—continuously attacking an opponent knocked airborne—adding strategic depth and visual appeal to combat. Mortal Kombat sparked widespread controversy at the time due to its violent and gory content, but also drew massive players and achieved huge commercial success. Its success spawned sequels and film adaptations, further cementing its status in the fighting game genre.
