Metal Warriors is a side-scrolling action shooter developed by LucasArts and published by Konami. It launched exclusively for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in North America in April 1995. Set in 2102 AD, Earth has been under invasion by the Dark Axis army led by dictator Venkar Amon for three years. Players take on the role of Lieutenant Stone from the freedom fighters, piloting various mechs to complete missions, defeat the Dark Axis, and liberate Earth. The game features six playable mechs, each with unique weapons and abilities, letting players pick the right unit for each mission. It uses a seven-button control scheme, blending action, shooting, and mission exploration for a rich gameplay experience. During development, the team drew inspiration from multiple mecha-themed anime and games, especially the 1992 title Cybernator. While the two share similarities in gameplay and themes, Metal Warriors won over fans with its distinctive mech designs and varied mechanics. Upon release, it earned high praise from players and critics for its polished graphics, diverse mech roster, and intense combat. Though challenging, its difficulty and replay value make it a classic SNES title.
