Metal Slug 7 is a side-scrolling shooter developed by SNK Playmore, released in Japan on July 22, 2008 for the Nintendo DS. As the seventh main entry in the Metal Slug series, it was the first title to launch directly on a handheld console instead of arcades. The game retains the franchise’s signature humor and intense, thrilling combat. In the story, players once again take on the role of members of the Peregrine Falcon Strike Force, teaming up with the Sparrows and Ikari Warriors to track down and stop General Morden’s new coup attempt. The mission is set on a massive garbage island converted into a military fortress. Notably, after his previous defeats, General Morden gains unexpected support from high-tech soldiers from the future, making battles fiercer and more complex. The game features seven levels and three difficulty options: Beginner, Normal, and Hard. The Nintendo DS’s bottom screen serves as a map display, letting players easily check level layouts, item locations, and the positions of captured prisoners of war. Alongside classic series weapons, the game adds a new weapon called "Thunder Shot", which fires homing electric projectiles that track enemies. For characters, players can choose from six fighters: Marco Rossi, Tarma Roving, Fio Germi, Eri Kasamoto, Ralf Jones, and Clark Still, each with unique skills and traits. On December 23, 2009, SNK Playmore released an enhanced version titled *Metal Slug XX* for the PlayStation Portable, adding co-op mode, the downloadable character Leona Heidern, and more. It was later ported to Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation 4, and Steam. Overall, *Metal Slug 7* preserves the series’ classic elements while bringing optimizations and innovations tailored for handheld platforms, delivering a brand-new gaming experience to players.
