Game Introduction

Mega Man X is an action game released by Capcom on December 17, 1993, for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and it is the first spin-off in the Mega Man franchise. Set 100 years after the original Mega Man series, the game follows the new-generation robot X, who teams up with his partner Zero to fight the rogue Maverick Hunter Sigma and his subordinates, protecting humanity from threats. While retaining classic elements from the original series, the game introduces new features like wall jumping and armor systems, enhancing its playability and challenge.

Gameplay

Game Overview

Mega Man X launched on the Super Nintendo on December 17, 1993 as the first spin-off branch of the Mega Man franchise. It is set a century after the original series and stars X, a new-generation robot, alongside his partner Zero. The villain is Sigma, a Maverick Hunter who turns on humanity and leads eight rogue Reploids in an uprising that pushes people underground.

Core Gameplay

X keeps the run and gun template but adds wall jumping and, once you find the leg capsule, a dash that changes how you approach every room. The eight Maverick stages can be taken in any order and their weapons form a weakness chain, so Chill Penguin falls to Flame Mammoth's Fire Wave while Flame Mammoth falls to Storm Eagle's Storm Tornado. Eight Heart Tanks and four Sub-Tanks are hidden across the stages, and Dr. Light's capsules hand out four armor parts: head for headbutting blocks, body for damage reduction, arms for the charge shot, legs for the dash.

Version Notes

This is the North American Rev 1 ROM. Item and armor placements match the Japanese release, the script is in English, and some death animations were toned down for Nintendo's guidelines at the time. Collect every upgrade, then return to the hidden capsule in Armored Armadillo's stage for the Hadouken, a single fireball that tears through most enemies. Progress is saved with passwords rather than a cartridge battery.

Game Tips

  • Wall jumping and a dash make X far more agile than classic Mega Man, and you can jump or shoot out of a dash
  • Four Dr. Light armor parts: head for breaking blocks, body for damage reduction, arms for the charge shot, legs for the dash
  • Eight Heart Tanks and four Sub-Tanks hidden across the eight stages, with Sub-Tanks storing energy for emergencies
  • Eight Maverick bosses form a weakness chain and hand over their weapons when defeated
  • Armored Armadillo's stage lets you pilot a Ride Armor and punch your way through
  • Collect every upgrade, then return to the hidden capsule in Armored Armadillo's stage for the Hadouken
  • Progress uses passwords; the cartridge has no battery save

Frequently Asked Questions

The main route is 2 to 3 hours. Collecting all eight Heart Tanks, four Sub-Tanks and the four armor parts pushes it past 5 hours.

Moderately tough. The opening highway and the platforming run through Sigma's fortress are the main walls, and having the full armor set relieves a lot of the pressure.

The game uses passwords, handing you one after each stage. There is no cartridge battery, so either write them down or use emulator save states.

No. The X series is set a century later with a new cast and story, so there is nothing you need to have played.

X2 gives you the dash from the very first stage and adds the three X-Hunters plus Zero's scattered parts. Here the dash is locked behind the leg armor capsule.
