Mega Man 3: The End of Dr. Wily!? is an action platformer released by Capcom on September 28, 1990, the third entry in the Mega Man series. It retains the classic gameplay of its predecessor: players control Mega Man to tackle eight brand-new levels, each with unique themes and enemies. A Robot Master awaits at the end of every stage; defeating them grants Mega Man their special weapon, adding strategic depth to the game.
This installment introduces the Slide move for the first time, letting players dodge enemy attacks or squeeze through narrow passages. Mega Man’s new partner, the support robot dog Rush, also makes his debut. Rush can transform into Rush Coil, Rush Jet, and Rush Marine to help Mega Man overcome various terrain obstacles.
The story centers on Dr. Wily’s supposed reformation. He teams up with Dr. Light to build Gamma, a giant robot for peacekeeping, and sends eight robots to an unknown planet to mine crystals. However, these robots suddenly go rogue during the mission, and Gamma goes missing too. Mega Man and Rush launch an investigation to uncover the conspiracy behind it all.
Mega Man 3 was widely praised worldwide, selling over 1 million copies. Its music, level design, and new gameplay mechanics earned acclaim from players and critics alike. A classic in the franchise, this game cemented the Mega Man series’ status in the action platformer genre.
