Lemmings 2: The Tribes is a puzzle-strategy game developed by DMA Design and published by Psygnosis in 1993, serving as the sequel to the 1991 title *Lemmings*. Retaining the core gameplay of its predecessor, it tasks players with guiding lemmings from various tribes through a series of levels, using multiple skills to help them reach the exit safely.
This installment introduces 12 distinct tribes, each with 10 levels for a total of 120 levels. Every tribe features unique themes, background music, and traps, boosting the game’s variety and challenge.
It adds 43 new skills, bringing the total to 51, including flying, climbing, and swimming. Players must strategically assign and use these skills based on level requirements to save as many lemmings as possible.
New mechanics include a fast-forward function to speed up gameplay, a fan tool to steer flying lemmings, and a practice mode for players to master skills and mechanics.
The story centers on 12 tribes on Lemming Island. According to an ancient prophecy, darkness will soon engulf the island, and the only way to survive is to escape using the power of the Lemming Amulet. Each tribe holds a piece of the amulet; players must help the lemmings collect all fragments, travel to the island’s center, and execute their escape plan.
Released on multiple platforms including Amiga, MS-DOS, Atari ST, Mega Drive, Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), and Game Boy, *Lemmings 2: The Tribes* was a commercial success with positive reviews, with critics praising its new mechanics and richer level design.
