Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is an action RPG released by Nintendo in 1987, the second entry in The Legend of Zelda series. It first launched in Japan on January 14, 1987 for the Famicom Disk System, then came to North American and European NES in 1988. Picking up after the first game, players control Link on a quest to save Princess Zelda, cursed by a sleeping spell. Unlike its predecessor, it uses a side-scrolling view and adds RPG elements like an experience system and magic skills. Link gains XP by defeating enemies to level up attack, magic and life. Players explore towns and dungeons on the overworld, solve puzzles, collect items, and learn new magic and skills to face stronger foes. The Adventure of Link was a commercial and critical success. Features like the magic meter and Dark Link carried over to later games, but its XP system, side-scrolling view and lives system were not retained in mainline sequels. Overall, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link laid groundwork for the series with its unique style and innovative gameplay, earning its status as a classic.
