Hokkaido Serial Murder: Disappeared in Okhotsk is an adventure game designed by Yuji Horii. First released in 1984 for multiple Japanese home computer platforms, it was ported to the Nintendo Famicom in 1987. Played from a first-person perspective, you take on the role of a Tokyo police officer investigating a male corpse found in Tokyo Bay. As the case deepens, clues lead you to Hokkaido, where you team up with local detective Shunsuke Saruwatari to visit real tourist spots including Kushiro, Abashiri, Shiretoko, and Monbetsu, and uncover the truth behind a string of serial murders. The game features a menu-based command system: you advance the story by selecting commands like Move, Ask, Take, Show, and Photograph, and use the Examine command to investigate specific scene areas in detail. This interaction style was groundbreaking for Japanese adventure games at the time. In 2024, G-MODE released a remake titled Hokkaido Serial Murder: Disappeared in Okhotsk ~Reminiscence of Drift Ice·Tearful Nipopo Doll~ for Nintendo Switch and Windows. While retaining the original’s essence, the remake features updated graphics and UI, full voice acting, and new story content supervised by Yuji Horii.
