John Madden Football '93 is an American football simulation game published by Electronic Arts in 1992, available for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and Sega Genesis. It is the third entry in the Madden series and the first to launch simultaneously on both platforms. Players can choose from modes like preseason, regular season, playoffs, and sudden death. The game features single-player, two-player versus, and co-op modes. Before each match, players can adjust settings such as game mode, weather conditions, and participating teams. John Madden Football '93 introduces new features including no-huddle offense, referee call overturns, taunts, trips, headbutts, and one-handed catches. It updates stats for 28 NFL teams and adds 8 classic rosters, such as the 1976 Oakland Raiders and 1977 Dallas Cowboys. It also includes the "All-Madden Greats" team of historical legends and the "All-Madden" team of recent stars. Note that due to lacking official NFL licensing, no official team names, colors, or stadium names are used. The Sega Genesis version was developed by Looking Glass Studios, which was also working on *Ultima Underworld* at the time. With a tight schedule, the studio completed development in five months. John Madden Football '93 was a commercial success, selling over one million copies. Critics praised its updated graphics, though some noted it had few changes compared to its predecessor.
