Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll is a side-scrolling platformer developed and published by Culture Brain. It first launched in Japan for the Famicom on February 14, 1987, and released in North America in August 1989. Blending action and RPG elements, it is the second entry in the Flying Dragon series. The story is set in a mysterious region of China. The protagonist, Ryuhi, was raised on a high mountain peak, trained in martial arts by his wise master Juan. One day, Juan is attacked, and his "Flying Dragon Secret Scrolls" are stolen. Before dying, Juan gives Ryuhi the sixth scroll, the "Mind's Eye Scroll," and tells him to go to Shaolin Temple. Ryuhi obeys, becomes a disciple of Shaolin abbot Genkai, and continues training in Shaolin kung fu. Six years later, the mysterious "Tusk Army" challenges Shaolin Temple to the upcoming "World Fighting Tournament." Ryuhi decides to represent Shaolin and stop the Tusk Army from winning. Genkai reveals the Tusk Army was behind Juan's attack and the theft of the scrolls. For his master and justice, Ryuhi sets off for the tournament. The game has two modes: Journey stages and Tournament stages. In Journey stages, players control Ryuhi through side-scrolling levels, defeat enemies, and find key items. Tournament stages are one-on-one fighting matches, similar to the series' previous title, Shanghai Kid. To get the true ending, players must beat the game twice. On the first playthrough, collect all six Secret Scrolls. On the second, collect all six scrolls again plus four crystal balls that only appear in the second run. Missing any items locks the true ending. Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll received positive reviews at launch. Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu gave it a score of 28 out of 40.
