Illusion of Gaia (Japanese: Gaia Gensouki) is an action RPG developed by Quintet, released by Enix in Japan and Nintendo in the West. It first launched for the Super Nintendo in 1993. The story follows Will, a teen with mysterious psychic powers. After his father vanishes exploring the Tower of Babel and a sea accident awakens his telepathic abilities, Will is guided by the Earth spirit Gaia on a quest to save the world. His goal: collect six mystical statues to stop an impending catastrophic comet. During his adventure, Will visits locations based on real ancient ruins, including Inca sites, the Nazca Lines, Angkor Wat, the Great Wall, the lost continent of Mu, and Egyptian pyramids—each holding clues to resolving the global crisis. The game features real-time combat. Players control Will and his two transformable forms: Freedan the Dark Knight and Shadow. Each form has unique skills and attack styles, requiring players to switch forms to suit different enemies and environments. Loved by fans for its gripping story, rich gameplay, and stunning visuals, Illusion of Gaia has music by Yasuhiro Kawasaki, character designs by acclaimed manga artist Moto Hagio, and a script by novelist Mariko Ohara. As the second entry in the unofficial "Quintet trilogy" (often called the Heaven and Earth series), it shares thematic and gameplay similarities with predecessor Soul Blazer and successor Terranigma, despite having no direct story links.
