Illusion of Gaia is an action RPG developed by Japan's Quintet and published by Enix, released for the Super Nintendo (SFC) in Japan on November 27, 1993. It is the second entry in the "Gaia Trilogy", alongside Soul Blazer and Terranigma.
The story follows Will, a boy who loses his father during an expedition to the Tower of Babel. On his journey, Will discovers he has special abilities and is tasked with saving the world. Players control Will as he explores ancient ruins around the globe, including the Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, and Angkor Wat, to uncover hidden mysteries.
During gameplay, Will can transform into two forms: Freedan the Dark Knight and Shadow, each with unique skills to help solve puzzles and defeat enemies. The game uses a linear narrative structure; players progress through the story and cannot return to previously explored areas.
Illusion of Gaia is widely praised for its detailed story, thoughtful system design, and beautiful 2D hand-drawn graphics, and is regarded as a classic of the 2D gaming era.
