HyperZone is a rail shooter developed and published by HAL Laboratory, released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1991. It leverages the SNES Mode 7 graphics to deliver unique visuals.
Players pilot a spaceship along fixed rails, destroying enemies and earning points. Each level ends with a powerful boss. As points accumulate, the ship upgrades at the start of each new level, up to six times. The game has 8 levels; after completion, it restarts with the player’s final ship status and score retained, allowing infinite loops.
Set in 2089, Earth can no longer support life due to human negligence. The Earth Council targets the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter to build a new home, but hostile cyber lifeforms have occupied the area. Players must eliminate these threats for humanity’s survival.
HyperZone performed well in Japan and was named a top-selling Japanese game by Nintendo Power.
