Game Introduction

Kirby Super Star (Japanese: Hoshi no Kirby Super Deluxe) is a Super Nintendo game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. Released in 1996 in Japan and North America, 1997 in Europe, it’s beloved for its rich content and varied modes. It features multiple standalone sub-games with unique gameplay: Spring Breeze teaches basics for new players; Gourmet Race is a speed contest against King Dedede; The Great Cave Offensive lets players explore underground caves for treasure; Milky Way Wishes requires collecting abilities to challenge strong foes. Players control Kirby, using his iconic inhale and copy abilities to swallow enemies and gain their skills, adding strategy and diversity. It sold over 1 million copies in Japan, a classic SNES title. For the series’ 15th anniversary in 2008, Nintendo released the DS remake Kirby Super Star Ultra, adding new modes while retaining the original’s charm.

Gameplay

Game Overview

Hoshi no Kirby Super Deluxe, released abroad as Kirby Super Star, was developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Super Famicom on March 21, 1996, directed by Masahiro Sakurai. There is no single campaign. The cartridge holds six main adventures, the boss gauntlet The Arena, and two timing minigames, Megaton Punch and Samurai Kirby, sold on the promise of eight games in one.

Core Gameplay

Kirby still inhales enemies and copies their powers, but every Copy Ability now comes with a full moveset driven by different button inputs, so Sword, Fighter and Suplex play almost like fighting game characters. The real addition is the Helper system: press A and Kirby gives up his current ability to summon a partner, controlled by the CPU or by a second player, which makes almost the entire collection playable in co-op.

Japanese Release Notes

This is the original Japanese ROM. Text is sparse but entirely in Japanese, so players who cannot read it will want to memorise where each sub-game sits on the corkboard menu. The Japanese version also scrolls its dialogue faster in Revenge of Meta Knight and Milky Way Wishes, which is why speedrunners use it. Kirby Super Star Ultra on Nintendo DS is the 2008 remake of this exact game.

Game Tips

  • Six main adventures plus the boss gauntlet The Arena, and two timing minigames, Megaton Punch and Samurai Kirby
  • Helper system: trade a Copy Ability for a CPU or second-player partner, making almost everything co-op
  • The Great Cave Offensive hides 60 treasure chests across four areas, including nods to other Nintendo series
  • Revenge of Meta Knight puts a timer on every stage as you work to bring down the battleship Halberd
  • Milky Way Wishes removes inhale copying; you collect stars to buy permanent abilities and face Marx at the end
  • Each Copy Ability has its own moveset and hat, with real combos on Sword, Fighter, Suplex and Yo-Yo
  • A continuous HP bar instead of discrete pips, plus a guard move on L and R

Frequently Asked Questions

The six main adventures run from twenty minutes to over an hour each, so a full clear including The Arena lands around 5 to 8 hours, with The Great Cave Offensive taking the longest.

Difficulty climbs from one star in Spring Breeze to five in Milky Way Wishes, and most of it is gentle enough for beginners. The Arena is the real test, since you fight every boss back to back with limited supplies.

Yes, the Super Famicom cartridge saves, and finishing a sub-game records it with a CLEAR stamp on the menu. There is no manual mid-level save, so use save states if you need to stop partway.

The DS remake adds new sub-games and Copy Abilities, redraws the graphics and music, and includes higher difficulty modes. The original is tighter and has a different pacing.

A little. Menus, prompts and story text are all Japanese. Dialogue is minimal though, so you can clear all six adventures by experimenting, though you will want a translation to follow the plot.
