Front Line is a military-themed vertical scrolling shooter developed by Japan's Taito and released in 1982. Players take on the role of a lone soldier armed with a pistol and grenades, fighting through enemy lines to destroy the enemy fortress and force their surrender. Praised for its unique perspective and gameplay, it stands as one of the pioneers of early entries in the genre. During gameplay, players face waves of enemy soldiers that attack from all directions to halt their advance. Enemy troops wear green uniforms and blue helmets, while the player character dons a blue uniform and red helmet. Beyond infantry combat, the game also features tank battles: players can pilot a blue tank to engage enemy green tanks. There are two tank types: light tanks with machine guns, which are highly mobile but lightly armored, and heavy tanks with cannons, which are slower but boast superior firepower and defense. The core objective is to capture the enemy fortress. Players must carefully approach the stronghold, dodge enemy fire, and throw grenades to destroy the tanks inside. Once all tanks are eliminated, enemy soldiers raise a white flag in surrender, granting the player bonus points. After each victory, the game difficulty ramps up, with more intense enemy attacks posing a greater challenge. First launched as an arcade title, Front Line was later ported to multiple home consoles and computer platforms, including the Atari 2600, ColecoVision, MSX, and NES/Famicom. Its distinctive mechanics and innovative design left a lasting impact on subsequent games in the genre, cementing its status as one of the founding titles of vertical scrolling shooters.
