Heavy Barrel is an arcade shooter developed and published by Data East in 1987, later ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1990. Played from a top-down perspective, you take on the role of a special forces soldier tasked with infiltrating a terrorist-held underground missile base, eliminating the enemy leader, and defusing a nuclear threat.
At the start, you only have an infinite-ammo laser pistol and a limited supply of grenades. Defeating enemies and opening crates scattered throughout levels grants weapon upgrades and items. These crates require keys to unlock and may contain weapon upgrades, grenade refills, or one of six parts that form the "Heavy Barrel" superweapon. Collecting all six pieces lets you assemble this devastating weapon, which can wipe out all on-screen enemies in seconds.
Controls are similar to the contemporary *Ikari Warriors*: the arcade version uses a rotary joystick to let you move and shoot in different directions simultaneously, while the NES version replicates this with dual-button combinations. The game supports single-player or two-player co-op, tasking you with outmaneuvering waves of enemies, smartly using weapons and items, and fighting through stages to destroy the enemy base.
With its intense pacing, varied weapon system, and unique controls, Heavy Barrel became one of the most popular shooters of its era.
