Game Introduction

Double Dragon for the NES is the definitive home port of the arcade hit that launched the beat 'em up craze. Play as twin brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee, masters of the Sōsetsuken martial art, as they infiltrate the Black Warriors' territory. Battle diverse enemies across multiple stages using powerful combos, throws, and weapons like knives and bats. With its smooth gameplay and iconic soundtrack, Double Dragon remains a cornerstone of retro gaming history and a must-play for fans of 8-bit martial arts action.

Gameplay

Game Overview

Technos Japan brought its own arcade hit to the NES in 1988, releasing in Japan on April 8 before Tradewest published it in North America two months later. The story is the same one arcade players knew: brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee fighting through the Black Warriors to rescue Marian. The port rebuilds the stages from scratch, though - it adds platforming, bottomless pits and a trap corridor, so the level design is very much its own thing rather than a shrunken arcade.

Core Gameplay

There are four missions, running from the city slums through a factory and construction site, into the woods, and finally into the gang hideout. Hardware limits mean only two enemies can be on screen at once, and they are always the same character type. Dropped knives, baseball bats, whips, rocks, oil drums and dynamite can be picked up and swung, but they do not carry over between fights. The port adds an experience system the arcade never had: every 1,000 points earns a heart, and each heart unlocks a new technique - uppercuts and high kicks, then the jump kick, grabs, a finisher on downed enemies, the back-turned elbow smash and finally a jumping roundhouse.

Advanced Techniques

The sixth heart unlocks the elbow smash, triggered by pressing punch while your back is to an enemy without turning around; it ties with the final unlock as the hardest-hitting move in the game. Jump kicks have far more reach than punches and are the safest opener against Abobo and whip-carrying enemies. Mission 4's trap corridor punches bricks out of the walls on a cycle - find a spot nothing reaches and jump on the beat instead of running the length of it. In the outdoor stages, enemies knocked into a pit are gone instantly, so fighting near ledges is worth the risk.

Game Tips

  • Stages rebuilt for the NES with platforming, bottomless pits and a trap corridor in Mission 4
  • Seven-level experience system: every 1,000 points unlocks a new technique, from basic punches up to the jumping roundhouse
  • Pick-up weapons - knives, bats, whips, rocks, oil drums, dynamite - that vanish when the fight ends
  • Mode B is a separate one-on-one versus mode with double-sized sprites and five playable enemy characters
  • Machine Gun Willy is not the last fight: Beat him and you still have to face your own brother Jimmy
  • Only two enemies on screen at a time, always the same type - the port's most visible compromise
  • Soundtrack by Kazunaka Yamane, one of the most recognisable NES scores

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The first NES Double Dragon drops the arcade's simultaneous co-op - in Mode A the two players simply alternate turns, and both control Billy. Real two-player co-op came back in Double Dragon II on the NES.

Four missions, and a practiced player clears them in 15 to 20 minutes. Expect that to double on a first run, since losing lives knocks you back through the stage.

They are your experience level. Every 1,000 points scored earns one heart, and each heart unlocks a new technique. Seven are available, the last one being the jumping roundhouse.

A separate one-on-one versus mode. You pick Billy or one of five enemy characters and fight a clone controlled by the CPU or a second player, using double-sized sprites. Matches against the CPU are handicapped in the computer's favour.

Machine Gun Willy near the end of Mission 4 is not the last fight. Once he goes down another door opens and Billy faces his own brother Jimmy - a showdown the arcade staged only as an epilogue duel between two players.
