Dossun! Ganseki Battle is a puzzle game released by I'Max on December 16, 1994, for the Super Famicom. Set in a medieval fantasy world, it pits players against each other by clearing falling blocks, with gameplay similar to classic match-3 titles like Puyo Puyo and Columns.
To clear blocks, players line up at least three matching symbols vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Clearing blocks not only frees up space on the board but also deals damage to the opponent. The block types and their effects are as follows:
- **Book, Sword, and Rock Blocks**: When cleared, they attack the opponent as fireballs, dragons, or sword strikes respectively.
- **Potion Blocks**: Clearing them restores a portion of the player’s health.
- **Purple Blocks**: They have no special effect but take up space, raising the game’s difficulty.
The game also features a chain reaction system. Consecutive clears trigger stronger attacks or spawn gray blocks in the opponent’s play area. Gray blocks can be cleared but do not fall on their own, adding a strategic layer to the game. Complex chains can unlock special attacks — players can hold up to three at once and activate them with the shoulder buttons. These special moves include clearing all purple blocks, using all potion blocks to heal, and wiping out the bottom three rows of blocks.
Players can choose from different characters, each with unique health stats, attack styles, and special skills. For example, Hawk’s special skill clears all purple blocks, Ruu can use all potion blocks to heal, and Ed can remove all gray blocks. There is also a hidden character, Zor, who boasts higher health and powerful special abilities.
With its unique battle-puzzle gameplay and deep strategic elements, Dossun! Ganseki Battle delivers a fresh and engaging gaming experience.
