Super Mario Bros. 2 is a 1988 NES action game released by Nintendo in North America. Adapted from the Japanese title Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, it replaces the original cast with Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad, with adjusted levels and mechanics.
Players choose from four playable characters, each with unique traits: Mario has balanced stats; Luigi jumps higher and floats longer; Toad is the fastest but has a lower jump; Princess Peach can hover in midair for extended periods.
The game features 7 worlds with multiple levels each. Players pluck plants and items from the ground to throw at enemies. Special potions unlock hidden doors, leading to health-boosting mushrooms or secret warp zones.
Note that the 1986 Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 (officially *Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels* in the West) is a distinct game from the 1988 North American release. The former is a direct, highly difficult sequel to the original *Super Mario Bros.*, while the latter is a reworked version of *Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic* with unique gameplay and design.
Praised for its one-of-a-kind mechanics and character roster, *Super Mario Bros. 2* remains a beloved series entry. It has been re-released multiple times, including in the 1993 *Super Mario All-Stars* collection and the 2001 Game Boy Advance title *Super Mario Advance*.
