Cool Spot is a side-scrolling platform game developed and published by Virgin Games in 1993. Initially released for the Mega Drive/Genesis and Super Nintendo (SNES), it was later ported to the Sega Master System, Game Gear, Game Boy, Amiga, and MS-DOS. The game stars the 7 Up mascot Cool Spot, a red dot wearing sunglasses. Players control Cool Spot through levels, collecting enough "spots" to rescue trapped friends. Cool Spot can jump and attack enemies by throwing soda bubbles. Each level has a time limit, unique enemies, and obstacles that boost challenge. Health is shown via Cool Spot’s facial expression: it grows more pained as he takes damage, until he collapses. There’s no save feature, but flagpole checkpoints let players restart from specific spots after failing. In the European version, since 7 Up’s local mascot was Fido Dido, 7 Up logos were replaced with Virgin’s "V" logo, and content was adjusted accordingly. Praised by players and critics for its stunning graphics, smooth animation, and challenging level design, Cool Spot is regarded as one of the must-play platformers of the 16-bit era.
