Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. is a 3D fighting game released by Midway in 1998 for PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and Windows. Set in the futuristic "New Amerika", rapid advances in technology and bioengineering spark constant corporate conflicts, triggering the "Techno-Industrial Civil War" that collapses the national economy and leads states to secede. To prevent further conflict and reunite America, the Secret Game Committee (SGC) is formed, working with remaining government officials to organize a fighting tournament to settle corporate disputes. Each corporation picks a champion; the winner’s corporation claims all the loser’s states, ultimately deciding which firm controls all of New Amerika. For this, corporations create "Biological Flying Robotic Enhanced Armored Killing Synthoids" (Bio F.R.E.A.K.S.) as representatives. However, some F.R.E.A.K.S. resent corporate control and start an underground resistance movement fighting for equal rights. The game uses a full 3D fighting engine, with 8 unique fighters and 2 boss characters playable. Each character has distinct melee and ranged attacks, plus Mortal Kombat-style "Fatalities" that can execute opponents and even sever limbs. Battles take place in multi-level 3D arenas, where players can fly with jetpacks and perform multi-directional dashes and attacks. Emphasizing mobility, the game delivers a rich combat experience.
