Game Introduction

The critically acclaimed RPG returns on GBA. Final Fantasy VI Advance features an epic story of magic and rebellion against the Empire. Control up to 14 characters, summon Espers, and explore a steampunk world. This version includes new dungeons, spells, and a refined translation.

Gameplay

Game Overview

Magic has faded from the world while machine civilization rose in its place, and the Gestahlian Empire uses Magitek armor to conquer everything in reach. Tina, a girl with no memory of her past, ends up with the Returners, the resistance fighting that empire. Final Fantasy VI debuted on the Super Famicom in 1994; Tose handled this Game Boy Advance port, released in Japan at the end of November 2006 and in North America on February 5, 2007. Fourteen playable characters each bring their own command and their own theme.

Core Gameplay

Combat runs on the Active Time Battle system, where gauges fill by speed and commands have to be issued inside a shifting window. Characters learn spells by equipping Magicite, which also grants stat bonuses on level up and can be summoned, so party composition is entirely up to you. Once the world breaks apart, the second half drops the linear objective and hands you an airship to track down scattered allies one by one.

Port Additions

Over the Super Famicom original, this version adds four Espers - Leviathan, Gilgamesh, Cactuar and Diabolos - plus a new dungeon called the Dragons' Den, guarded by Kaiser Dragon, an enemy that was coded into the original but never used. The Soul Shrine offers continuous battles for grinding, and three new spells, new equipment for every character, a bestiary and a music player round out the additions. The script was retranslated from the Japanese with Japanese naming conventions restored (Thundara rather than Bolt2) and a batch of original bugs fixed; the trade-off is that the PlayStation version's FMV sequences are absent.

Game Tips

  • Fourteen playable characters, each with a signature command - Terra's Trance, Locke's Steal, Celes's Runic, Gau's Rage and Sketch
  • Magicite system: equip Espers to learn spells, gain stat bonuses on level up and summon them in battle
  • Active Time Battle combat where gauges fill by speed and every command is a timing decision
  • Four new Espers exclusive to this port: Leviathan, Gilgamesh, Cactuar and Diabolos
  • New Dragons' Den dungeon with Kaiser Dragon, an enemy coded but unused in the original, plus a Soul Shrine for endless fights
  • Three new spells, fresh equipment for every character, a bestiary and a music player
  • Open-ended second half: once you have the airship, you choose the order in which you recover your scattered allies

Frequently Asked Questions

The main story runs about 30 to 40 hours. Clearing the Dragons' Den and Soul Shrine while collecting every Esper usually takes 45 or more, and the open second half stretches things further.

It adds four Espers (Leviathan, Gilgamesh, Cactuar, Diabolos), two new locations in the Dragons' Den and Soul Shrine, three new spells, new gear for every character, a bestiary and a music player, along with a retranslated script and bug fixes. The PlayStation version's FMV cutscenes are gone.

No. Numbered entries are standalone, and this one builds its world, systems and cast from scratch.

It sits in the easier half of 16-bit JRPGs and the story rarely walls you off, but the port-exclusive bosses such as Kaiser Dragon demand dedicated leveling and loadouts.

The GBA version has no touch or link requirements, so everything runs. The encounter rate is high, so save states help, and make sure the save type is configured correctly or your progress will not stick.
