Aretha is a role-playing game (RPG) developed by Japanese studio Japan Art Media and published by Yanoman. First released for Game Boy in 1990, it got a Super Famicom sequel in 1993. Its standout feature is the unique battle system: players fend off enemies from four directions (front, back, left, right), adding strategy and challenge. Characters move briskly and auto-dodge obstacles, ensuring smooth pacing and better gameplay. Players follow protagonist Ariel and her party across forests, mountain paths, and caves on a vast world map. Battles are turn-based with a first-person view, letting players use physical and special attacks against monsters. The Aretha series was successful in Japan. Aretha II: Ariel no Fushigi na Tabi and Aretha III launched for Super Famicom in 1991 and 1995 respectively. A spin-off, Rejoice: Aretha Ōkoku no Kanata, further expands the series’ world and story.
