Aretusa II: Ariel's Magical Journey is a Super Famicom RPG developed by Japan Art Media and published by Yanoman on December 2, 1994. As the 5th entry in the Aretusa series and 2nd on Super Famicom, it retains the prior game’s systems with minor graphical upgrades and a new damage number display feature.
Its story picks up right after the prequel: Queen Ariel receives a distress letter from warrior Kyle, who reveals he and mage Dole are trapped in a new world deep underground, facing powerful foes with Dole on the brink of death. Ariel sets out to rescue them, meets warrior Todd along the way, and together they enter the new world called the Gaia Rift.
Players control Ariel and her party, traveling across a world map through forests, mountain paths, and caves, with occasional town visits. Battles use a first-person turn-based system; enemies can appear from front, back, left, or right, requiring players to plan tactics based on their positions.
The game also introduces a "Soul Forging" system: players collect elemental souls from battles and can use them at specific locations to craft gear. However, the system’s mechanics are fairly obscure, and crafted equipment has random quality.
Overall, Aretusa II: Ariel's Magical Journey is a fast-paced, moderately difficult RPG perfect for fans of classic Japanese role-playing games.
