Mach Rider is a racing game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. It first launched on the Japanese Famicom on November 21, 1985, and later released in North America and Europe.
Set on Earth in 2112, players take on the role of Mach Rider, riding a high-performance motorcycle through regions occupied by the evil Quadrunners to find survivors and defeat enemies.
The game features four modes:
1. **Fighting Course**: The main mode. Players ride through 10 distinct areas, avoid obstacles and defeat enemies. After clearing all areas, the game restarts with new challenges.
2. **Endurance Course**: Complete a set distance within a time limit, with enemies and obstacles adding to the challenge.
3. **Solo Course**: Similar to Endurance Course but with no enemies, focusing on track and obstacle challenges.
4. **Design Mode**: Players can create and race on custom tracks. In the original game, this mode required the Famicom Data Recorder to save track data, a device only released in Japan.
Controls are relatively complex: use the left and right directional buttons to move the motorcycle, the A button to accelerate, and the B button to fire a machine gun to clear obstacles and enemies ahead. The up and down directional buttons shift between four gears; proper shifting helps boost speed and handling.
Notably, Nintendo released a plastic racing toy called "Mach Rider" back in 1972, featuring a jump ramp and three different dashboard designs.
With its unique setting and challenging gameplay, Mach Rider is one of the classic racing games of the Famicom/NES era.
