Yoshi's Story is a side-scrolling platform game developed and published by Nintendo. It first launched in Japan for the Nintendo 64 on December 21, 1997, and rolled out worldwide in 1998. It released on the iQue Player in mainland China on March 25, 2004, with Simplified Chinese support.
Set on Yoshi's Island, the story follows Baby Bowser, who turns the island into a storybook and steals the Super Happy Tree that brings joy. To restore the island, the Yoshis embark on an adventure. The game features a unique crayon art style with bright, playful colors, delivering a distinct visual experience.
In terms of gameplay, players control Yoshi to collect fruit across various levels. Each level has 60 regular fruits, and players only need to eat 30 to clear it. The game spans 6 worlds with 24 levels total, but only one level per world needs to be completed to advance; the full story mode takes about 2 hours to finish.
The game offers rich collectibles, such as hidden giant heart items, which unlock more levels when collected. It also supports controller vibration to boost player immersion.
While Yoshi's Story has unique strengths in visuals and gameplay, its relatively simple level design and short single-playthrough time meant its sales and reputation did not match those of its predecessor, Yoshi's Island.
