Universal Soldier is an action platformer adapted from the 1992 film of the same name. Developed by The Code Monkeys, it was planned for SNES release by Accolade but only exists as an unreleased prototype.
Its development backstory is intriguing: The Code Monkeys was initially porting *Turrican II: The Final Fight* to home consoles. Late in development, Accolade acquired the game rights to the *Universal Soldier* film and retooled the project as a tie-in, modifying the protagonist to match the film’s lead and adjusting enemies and levels to fit the movie’s theme.
In gameplay, players control the hero through levels, battling enemies with varied weapons and skills while navigating tricky terrain and enemy layouts. While rooted in *Turrican II*, the game received visual and story changes to align with the film.
Notably, while *Universal Soldier* launched on Sega Mega Drive and Game Boy, the SNES version never saw official release, with only prototypes surfacing—making it a rare, sought-after title among retro game collectors.
