Ultima VI: The False Prophet is a role-playing game developed by Origin Systems, first released in 1990. Its Japanese version is titled *Ultima VI: Itsuwari no Yogensha*, and it launched under the same name for the Super Famicom.
Set in the world of Britannia, the game follows the Avatar, who is summoned back from the real world. Right after passing through the moongate, the Avatar is captured by gargoyles, who nearly sacrifice him at an altar before his companions rescue him.
Britannia is on the brink of war amid a gargoyle invasion. As the Avatar fights to fend them off, he learns the invasion stems from his past act of bringing the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom to Britannia in the prior game, which pushed the gargoyles’ world to the edge of destruction. He then sets out to find a way for Britannia and the gargoyle realm to coexist.
This is the first Ultima game released for IBM PC, with vastly improved graphics. Towns and dungeons are integrated into a single large map instead of using separate area transitions, and battles take place directly on the world map rather than switching to a dedicated combat screen—this design carried over to the Ultima VII series.
Notably, the FM-Towns version includes voice acting, a rare feature for RPGs at the time. In the English release, Richard Garriott himself voices Lord British.
