Total Carnage is a multidirectional shooter developed by Midway Games in 1992 and ported to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1993. Set in the fictional nation of Kookistan in 1999, players take on the roles of Captain Carnage or Major Mayhem from the Doomsday Squad, tasked with overthrowing the dictator General Akhboob and his mutant army while rescuing captured prisoners of war. The game features dual-joystick controls: the left stick moves the character, while the right stick fires at enemies. Players battle hordes of foes across three levels, each ending with a powerful boss fight. Various weapons and bombs can be collected to boost firepower and take on tougher enemies. Total Carnage shares many similarities with Midway’s earlier title *Smash TV*, but adds new features like two-player co-op, scrolling levels, large enemy vehicles, and more expansive environments. The SNES version was ported by Black Pearl Software and published by Malibu Games. It simulates the original arcade dual-control setup by mapping the console’s four main buttons (A, B, X, Y) to directional fire, allowing players to shoot in different directions while running. Overall, Total Carnage delivers an intense gaming experience with its fast-paced shooting gameplay and diverse weapon system, making it a classic shooter worth trying on the SNES platform.
