Game Introduction

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass takes Link on a high-seas adventure designed exclusively for the Nintendo DS. Continuing the story of The Wind Waker, Link must rescue Tetra from a mysterious Ghost Ship with the help of the fairy Ciela and Captain Linebeck. The game features innovative full touch-screen controls, allowing you to navigate Link, swing his sword, and solve intricate puzzles using the stylus. Navigate the dangerous Temple of the Ocean King using the titular Phantom Hourglass to stall time, and use the dual-screen system to sketch notes on maps. This revised Chinese version ensures a smooth experience for fans of the franchise.

Gameplay

Game Overview

The story picks up after The Wind Waker: Tetra has been taken by a Ghost Ship, and Link sets sail with the fairy Ciela and the captain Linebeck to find her. Released in 2007 and built by Nintendo's EAD division, it is the first Zelda designed around full stylus control.

Core Gameplay

Everything runs through the lower screen - draw a line through Link to make him run, tap an enemy to slash, draw a loop for the spin attack, and steer and fire the cannon by sketching your shot's path on the sea chart up top. Inside the Temple of the Ocean King you answer to the Phantom Hourglass: the sand runs out, you are dragged back to the entrance, and how deep you can safely explore depends on how much sand you have banked.

About This Chinese Version

This is a revised Simplified Chinese edition built on top of an earlier fan translation. Menus, item and skill names, story dialogue and the in-field hints at sea and inside the temple are all localized, so nothing needs to be guessed at. The revision focuses on leftover mistranslations and on technical problems such as softlocks and lost save data that affected earlier circulating builds, making it the safer version to play. Dungeon layouts, enemy stats and the rules of the campaign are untouched, including the timed structure of the Temple of the Ocean King.

Game Tips

  • Full stylus control: draw paths to move, tap to slash, loop for the spin attack, sketch cannon shots and sea routes
  • Temple of the Ocean King runs on the Phantom Hourglass timer, and a single touch from a Phantom ends the run - depth depends on your sand capacity
  • The sea chart doubles as a notepad you can write on directly with the stylus
  • Ship battles ask you to draw the arc of each cannon shot at enemy vessels and sea bosses
  • Dual-screen puzzles, some of which lean on DS hardware such as the microphone
  • Revised Simplified Chinese edition: menus, items, skills and dialogue localized, with leftover mistranslations and earlier softlock or save-loss issues fixed
  • Supports local wireless battles, which are unavailable on emulators

Frequently Asked Questions

The main story runs about 15 to 20 hours. Repeated climbs of the Temple of the Ocean King plus treasure and ship part collection usually push it past 25.

Middle of the pack for the series. Combat is manageable; the real pressure is the Temple of the Ocean King's timer and the fact that a single Phantom touch ends your run, which eases off once routes are memorized.

It continues that story but stands on its own. The opening re-establishes who everyone is, so you will follow it fine and only miss a few call-backs.

A mouse drag maps cleanly to the stylus and feels close to the real thing. The few sections that need you to blow into the microphone require a key mapping or an emulator with mic input.

The DS version saves to the cartridge, which is a .sav file on an emulator. This revised edition has addressed the save-loss issues seen in earlier Chinese builds, though save states are still worth keeping as a backup.
