The Super Game Boy is a 1994 Nintendo peripheral for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), designed to let users play Game Boy games on the SNES console via TV. It looks like an SNES cartridge with a top Game Boy slot: plug it into the SNES, insert a Game Boy card, and play on TV.
When running games, it displays the gameplay in the center of the TV screen surrounded by a Game Boy-style frame. It offers multiple pseudo-color palettes; players can switch between light, dark reddish-brown and other modes using the SNES controller’s X button. For games marked "Super Game Boy compatible" on their packaging, it loads custom built-in frames unique to each title.
Note that the Super Game Boy does not support hot swapping. Always fully power off the SNES before inserting or removing Game Boy cartridges, then turn the console back on. Hot-swapping while the SNES is on may corrupt game save data. It also has no power switch—it activates automatically when the SNES turns on.
In 1998, Nintendo released the Super Game Boy 2, an upgraded model in Japan. It adds link support for connecting to a Game Boy via a link cable, and works with accessories like the Game Boy Camera and Game Boy Printer.
